What is our School Workshop?

Simply Signing’s New School Workshop offers children a new exploration in language and expression. The workshop is hands-on and interactive. Children explore and discover Irish Sign Language by :

  • Introducing children not only to Irish Sign Language but to Deaf Awareness and Deaf Culture.
  • Encouraging children to explore sign language through music and signed stories and puppets.
  • Introducing children to Deaf Awareness by looking at different types of hearing aids.

How does it work?

Our workshop takes place on-site at your school or centre. Introducing Irish Sign Language, songs and signed stories and taught by our individual Presenters. The workshop is aimed at Junior Infants, Senior Infants and First class. The workshop aims to:

  • Grow children’s curiosity of sign language.
  • Explore sign language and teach children the manual sign alphabet and signs.
  • Introduce deaf awareness and hearing aids
  • Show children a new skill that is educational, interesting and fun.
  • Each child recieves an ISL Alphabet card and “I Can Sign “ badge.

Teachers/supervisors, are also welcome to participate, and advised on follow-up activities for classroom use.

Who will present the workshop?

Our Presenters are professionals in Deafness and have a wealth of experience in the area of Deaf culture and sign language and have been carefully selected for their ability to work with and engage young children. They are also fully trained by Simply Signing, Garda vetted and fully insured.

How much does it cost?

A workshop for your school or centre costs as little as €6 per child for a one-hour workshop. As they take place on-site, there are no travel or transport costs to be factored in, and minimal disruption of classroom schedules. For those schools classed as DEIS (Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools) by the Department of Education, the workshops are available at 10% discounts.

How can we pay for workshops?

Some schools ask the school children to contribute to the cost of a workshop, or the workshop can be paid for by funds from the school’s parents association, or through fundraising.

What do we need to provide?

Workshops generally require a large classroom or hall, all other materials, equipment will be brought by our presenter.
